Chapter 26

Jada

Jada wanted to comfort Francine after she had a breakdown and started sobbing about Cooper’s injuries being her fault, but she couldn’t stop eating. And part of her wanted to see how the burly bear handled a distraught kid. It said a lot about a man, how he handled tough stuff. How he reacted to a hysterical kid who wasn’t making a whole lot of sense. When Cooper started laughing, she figured she’d have to deck him to make him understand why laughing at a crying girl was not a good idea, but he recovered pretty well, all things considered.

Then they all ate in companionable silence. Francine got up to help herself directly from the coolers, searching for dessert, and Cooper loaded both their plates with far more meat and potatoes. Jada felt like he wanted them both stuffed to the gills and unable to move, more from guilt than anything else. She’d seen the look in his eyes when he couldn’t help them, when she had to save him.

Jada slowed down so she wasn’t inhaling the steak quite as quickly as before, though she paid attention to how Francine chewed to make sure she didn’t choke on anything. She didn’t need any more medical emergencies that night, or in the next week, or the next couple of months. She was all done with life-and-death shit.

Cooper eventually grumbled and got up to stretch, moving around to test his scars and the rest of his back. Francine held her breath as she watched, and Jada patted her leg to reassure the girl even though Jada worried he might start bleeding again as well.

But he didn’t, and only went through a series of stretches that demonstrated how much better he felt. Jada didn’t want to be jealous, but she felt like a someone beat on her with a two-by-four after the day she’d had, and not even the shifter healing made her feel any better. From what Ethan said, maybe it was all in her brain. Her brain was tired, that she knew for certain. Every inch of her was tired. And the rest of her was covered in Cooper’s blood and the ickiness of the drive and the motel and running around in town hoping that Cooper was still alive when she got back.

Her thoughts distracted her as Cooper ambled over to where a folded-up bed waited next to the television, and she frowned. She didn’t remember that being there. He unfolded it and started to put on the fitted sheet; before he got two corners tucked in, Francine had hopped up and scrambled over to finish the job, no doubt still worried about Cooper sending her away. But Cooper bumped her with his hip and shooed her back toward the bed. “I’ve got this. Go finish eating. Ethan said there were desserts in there. A pie, I think? Let me know what kind he sent.”

Francine looked back at Jada to check, and Jada resisted the urge to smile as she gestured for her cousin to retreat and let Cooper finish making the bed.
